The South Korea Friends Association Cyprus and The Island Private School of Limassol celebrated Seollal
2026-02-24The South Korea Friends Association Cyprus was honored to be invited by The Island Private School of Limassol to participate in its celebration of the Lunar New Year (Seollal) on February 17, 2026. The association’s participation formed part of the school’s wider festive program. The celebration involved six grades, with approximately 100 students aged 7 to 14 taking part in six Korean calligraphy workshop sessions, making this a unique cultural experience for Cyprus.
During the event, the association organized engaging Korean calligraphy workshops. A Korean expatriate volunteer guided the students in a simple and playful way, explaining that each Korean Hangeul letter is like a LEGO piece; easy to learn and combine. This creative approach made the learning process both fun and accessible for the children. Prior to the workshops, each participant received a Hangeul alphabet chart to help them better understand the writing system. The association also provided traditional rice paper so that students could experience authentic Korean calligraphy techniques. In addition, students received another educational chart telling the story of Hangeul and King Sejong, who created the writing system to help ordinary people, especially children, learn to read and write more easily. The children were fascinated and excited to learn that a king designed the alphabet with learning in mind.

After completing their creations, the association provided traditional Korean stamps, allowing the children to stamp their artwork in red ink, just as in authentic Korean calligraphy practice. This final step gave students a strong sense of pride and completion.
Furthermore, the students thoroughly enjoyed the calligraphy activity and felt proud as they created their own Korean characters. Also, students of age 14 and up had the opportunity to try on traditional Korean attire (hanbok), which was provided by the association, and pose for photos in front of the beautiful banner provided by the association, making the experience both interactive and memorable.
More than just a celebration, the event successfully brought the community together, highlighting cultural diversity and encouraging learning through hands-on experiences. The South Korea Friends Association Cyprus remains committed to promoting Korean culture and strengthening cultural ties within Cyprus.
