I had the wonderful opportunity to attend and be a part of the amazing journey as the Korean community in India recently celebrated a momentous milestone: the 70th anniversary of the Korean communityemphasised in India. On December 20, this significant occasion was marked with the Korean in India 70th Anniversary Year-End Cultural Concert, a gathering that honoured seven decades of shared history, cultural exchange, and the enduring friendship between Korea and India. The event brought together members of the Korean diaspora, Indian guests, diplomats, artists, and cultural enthusiasts to reflect on the past and look toward a collaborative future.
Distinguished Guests and Heartfelt Addresses
The celebration was graced by several dignitaries whose presence highlighted the importance of Korea-India relations. Among the notable speakers were His Excellency Mr. Seong-Ho Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India; Mr. Rajasekhar Chinthapally, former Ambassador of India to Korea; Mr. Jagdip Singh, Honorary Consul General of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea; and Mr. Euydon Park, President of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. Each delivered thoughtful remarks that emphasised the strength of bilateral ties and the important role the Korean community plays in India.
Ambassador SeongHo Lee expressed appreciation for the longstanding relationship between the two countries and acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Korean community in strengthening cultural and economic bonds. Mr. Rajasekhar Chinthapally reflected on the shared values and mutual respect that have fostered a positive and dynamic partnership. Mr Jagdip Singh highlighted the community’s efforts to integrate into Indian society while maintaining a strong connection to Korean culture. Mr. Euydon Park spoke about the importance of continued cultural engagement as a means to deepen understanding and friendship.

Commemorating a Shared Journey
The event began with a formal ceremony, featuring the Indian National Anthem, followed by welcoming remarks from the hosts. The ceremony’s tone was one of reverence and gratitude, acknowledging the community’s growth and integration over 70 years. Lee Kwang-il, president of the Korean Association in India, delivered a heartfelt message expressing thanks to community members and supporters. He praised the community’s resilience, unity, and cooperative spirit, highlighting how these values have helped Koreans in India become an integral part of the country’s diverse social fabric.
A specially prepared presentation showcased the history of the Korean community in India, tracing the community’s evolution from its early days to its current vibrant presence. This historical reflection allowed attendees to appreciate the challenges and achievements that have shaped the community’s identity and strengthened Korea-India ties.
A Night of Cultural Exchange Through Music and Dance
The second part of the programme transitioned into a year-end cultural concert that celebrated artistic expression as a bridge between cultures. The concert featured a rich variety of performances, ranging from classical music to contemporary dance, illustrating the dynamic cultural interaction between Korea and India.
Violinist Baek Jin Joo, an internationally acclaimed musician trained at prestigious institutions such as the Curtis School of Music and the Juilliard School, captivated the audience with her technically refined and emotionally resonant performance. Her career, which includes collaborations on numerous film soundtracks, adds a global dimension to her artistry that resonated deeply with the attendees.
Soprano You Gyeong Jin, known for her training at Italy’s National Conservatory of Verdi and her experience in major operatic productions, enchanted the audience with her clear, expressive voice. Her performance brought an air of classical elegance to the evening and highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions.
Adding a contemporary flair to the event, dancer Im Jongkyung delivered a powerful contemporary dance performance. His artistry combined dynamic movement with emotional storytelling, showcasing the evolving landscape of Korean performing arts and demonstrating how dance can transcend cultural and linguistic barriers.
The concert also included adult and children’s choir performances, skilfully guided by soprano You Gyeong Jin and pianist Lee Tae-jun. These choral presentations added a communal and intergenerational spirit to the event, emphasising the role of music in fostering unity. Complementing the performances were additional vocal, instrumental, and cultural segments, including Indian music pieces that symbolised the ongoing artistic dialogue between the two nations.

Engaging the Community Beyond Performances
The concert offered more than just stage performances. Attendees were invited to engage with interactive activities designed to foster participation and celebration. A themed photo zone, inspired by popular Korean cultural phenomena, attracted many visitors who took the opportunity to capture memories. A Korean coffee and dessert corner offered traditional refreshments such as yuja tea, yakgwa (Korean honey cookies), and rice cakes, allowing guests to savour authentic Korean flavours.
The event also featured a one-line message board, where attendees wrote personal messages of congratulations and support for the Korean Association in India. This interactive element symbolised the collective spirit and goodwill shared by the community and its friends. Customised tumblers engraved with names and commemorative designs were offered as keepsakes, while a lucky draw added an element of excitement and festivity.

Attending the concert was an enriching experience that underscored the power of cultural expression in building bridges between communities. The blend of solemn commemoration with vibrant celebration created an atmosphere of warmth, pride, and optimism.
