How a Korean Drama Sparked My Interest in a New Culture The Enduring Impact of “Jewel in the Palace” on a Young Viewer from Iran

When I was approximately six or seven years old, my parents and I began watching a historical drama broadcast on national television. At the time, I was unaware that the series was Korean. Nevertheless, there was an undeniable appeal that compelled me to watch every episode attentively.
The drama in question was Jewel in the Palace (Dae Jang Geum, 대장금).
What initially captivated me was the traditional attire, the hanbok (한복) , which appeared almost magical in its elegance and vibrancy. I distinctly recall wishing to wear such garments myself.

Subsequently, the architectural elements caught my attention: imposing wooden gates, expansive courtyards, and intricately designed rooftops. The mannerisms and speech patterns of the characters conveyed a distinct rhythm and cultural nuance that were entirely new to me. I often found myself envisioning walking through these historic settings and immersing in that world.
Equally compelling was the depiction of food — uniquely colorful dishes, meticulously prepared and presented with care. This portrayal sparked my curiosity, leading me to imitate Jang Geum’s cooking efforts using water and household spices in a toy kitchen. Although the results were more chaotic than culinary, the experience deepened my fascination.

What remained most impactful was the character of Jang Geum herself. Beyond her intelligence and skill, she embodied bravery, integrity, and resilience. One memorable scene depicts her forced departure from the palace, during which she declares, “If I cannot serve through cooking, then I will serve through medicine.” This message of perseverance resonated deeply with me, even as a child.
Following this experience, my interest in Korean culture expanded. I sought out additional Korean dramas, endeavored to learn some Korean vocabulary, and practiced using chopsticks. It became clear that I was not merely viewing entertainment but engaging with an unfamiliar culture.
As of 2025, I have had the honor of serving as an Honorary Reporter for Korea.net. Reflecting on my journey, I recognize that it all originated with a single drama. What began as a brief glimpse into a foreign culture has evolved into a meaningful connection. I look forward to the opportunity to visit Korea, particularly Yongin Daejanggeum Park, the filming location of the series. Experiencing those gardens firsthand would be akin to reconnecting with a cherished childhood memory.
For those unfamiliar with Jewel in the Palace, I highly recommend it. The series transcends historical narrative, embodying themes of resilience, kindness, and courage. It opened a door to a world I continue to explore with gratitude.
