In this article, let’s discover how Light Shop Keeper illuminates one’s imagination while showcasing Korean creativity and inspiring new audiences
Last December 3, 2024, I had the privilege of attending the virtual press conference for Light Shop Keeper, the latest supernatural mystery show on Disney+. Hosted by Park Kyung-lim in Seoul, the event featured some of Hallyu’s most notable actors: Ju Ji-hoon, Park Bo-young, Kim Min-ha, Kim Seol-hyun, Um Tae-goo, and Shin Eun-soo. Seasoned artists Lee Jung-eun, Park Hyuk-kwon, and Kim Seon-hwa also joined the discussion with local and international journalists.

Viewers and critics look forward to how Light Shop Keeper can entertain audiences. After attending the press briefing and previewing the first episode last December 4, here are five ways the series shines a spotlight on Korean talent and storytelling:
A realistic adaptation of a beloved webtoon
The eight-part series is based on a popular story by Kang Full, one of Korea’s world-renowned webtoonists. As the screenwriter for this adaptation, he ensures the essence of the narrative remains authentic. When asked how the drama differs from the webtoon Kang Full shares, “As you can see, there is a big cast. I wanted to delve deeper into each character and the dynamics between them. There are certain things that I cannot convey with lines and pictures. But with a 3D show, I could really show different emotions,” Kang Full details to the press. His active involvement underscores how Korean entertainment values its creators and honors the behind-the-scenes talents.

The directorial debut of actor Kim Hee-won
We all remember Kim Heewon’s portrayal as a teacher in the award-winning show, Moving. Now, he takes a bold step behind the camera. Park Bo-young, the main lead, narrates, “If there is a complex movement in the scene, Director Park would do it himself first. If he sees that there is going to be a problem, he asks, ‘Do you want me to adjust this?’ He would do the rehearsals himself before we got on set. That was a pleasant surprise for me.” This highlights the multifaceted talent of Korean stars, who excel not only as performers but also as advocates for an effective and safe workplace.
Stellar cast brings memorable characters to life
The show assembles a star-studded cast featuring Ju Ji-hoon, Park Bo-young, Kim Seol-hyun, Kim Min-ha, Lee Jung-eun, Park Hyuk-kwon, Bae Seong-woo, Kim Seon-hwa, Um Tae-goo, Kim Ki-hae, and Shin Eun-soo. Each emphasized the importance of collaboration and on-screen chemistry— a distinct flavor Korean dramas and movies are known for. Playing Jung Won-young, a character hidden behind sunglasses, presented unique challenges for seasoned actor Ju Ji-hoon. He explains, “I would speak as I would in real life, but the overall vibe and the energy had to be [different].” “Especially for Eunsoo’s character, I treat her as if she was my daughter so when I speak to her, I would use a different tone. With each person that I interact with, I bring a different vibe,” he discloses.

An immersive visual and auditory experience
Light Shop Keeper aims to faithfully recreate the iconic scenes and dialogues in the webtoon. For the set design, Director Kim enumerates, “We would do computer graphics based-simulation, and try out the distance and the blocking. [We often ask] ‘How does it feel for a person to walk 50 meters or 70 meters?’” He continues, “In each detail, we try to incorporate all of that into the design. We quite literally built a town.” The team also focused on creating a memorable experience for the actors and the viewers through skillful cinematography and sound design. This is a testament to how advanced and dedicated production houses are in Korea. This commitment was also evident during the press conference last Tuesday, where the stage at COEX Grand Ballroom in Gangnam District, Seoul, was transformed to recreate the iconic light shop.

Encourages exploration of the webtoon and other projects
The global marketing campaign for this Korean drama, combined with viewer curiosity, is expected to significantly boost interest in other Korean entertainment mediums. According to the Korea Times, the webtoon 조명가게 had garnered 150 million views since its release in 2011 as of December 3. This surge in popularity not only encourages audiences to read the comics but also to explore other projects by the cast, director, and writer, including their illustrations, television series, movies, and even reality shows.
As Light Shop Keeper continues to light up screens worldwide, we are reminded of the enduring magic of Korean talent and its ability to connect us all.
