El pasado 30 de setiembre se anunciaron los ganadores del Hangeul Festa 2024 y para mi felicidad mi video sobre la creación de la tierra desde la cosmovisión de algunos grupos indígenas de Costa Rica, obtuvo un 4° lugar. En esta nota les comparto datos relevantes sobre este certamen, mi participación y cómo algunos elementos de la cosmovisión indígena costarricense llegaron a ser visualizados en Corea como parte de este concurso.
¿Qué es el Hangeul Festa?
El Hangeul Festa es un festival en el que se invita a ciudadanos extranjeros de todo el mundo, cuya lengua materna no es el coreano, a escribir palabras o textos en su lengua materna pero utilizando el Hangeul como sistema de escritura. Este año, el periodo de participación fue de abril a agosto y contó con tres categorías:
-Be a singer: que consistía en escribir una canción de cuna.
-Be a storyteller: en el que había que relatar una pequeña historia relacionada con el origen del mundo.
-Expert challenge: en la que el reto era escribir las canciones del himno nacional de un país pero utilizando Hunmin Jeongeum, nombre original del Hangeul cuando se creó por primera vez y que tiene algunas variaciones con respecto al Hangeul moderno.
Be a storyteller
En mi caso decidí inclinarme por esta categoría. El objetivo era contar una historia pero no podía ser cualquiera, sino una historia relacionada con la creación de la tierra o el origen del mundo a partir de mitos, leyendas o del folclore de un país.
Costa Rica es un país con muchos mitos y leyendas en la cultura popular, pero no se me vino a la mente ninguna relacionada con la creación del mundo. Después de pensarlo un poco más, se me ocurrió investigar si alguno de los pueblos originarios de mi país tenían su propia versión sobre cómo fue creado el mundo o sobre su propio origen. En esa búsqueda fue que encontré el relato de la niña Iriria, de cuya sangre surgió la tierra sobre la cual Sibö depositó la semilla de los Bribrís y Cabécares. Decidí que esa era la historia que quería dar a conocer, consciente de que forma parte de una cultura a la que no pertenezco directamente, pero que sí es parte de los cimientos históricos y culturales de Costa Rica y que con mucho respeto aprecio y valoro su legado. El relato completo pueden escucharlo en el video con el cual participé en el Hangeul Festa (es importante mencionar que la versión bribrí y la cabécar tienen algunas diferencias por ejemplo en cuanto algunos nombres, pero comparten la esencia de la historia y procuré mantener aquello en lo que coinciden):
Fue un gran reto lingüístico
La participación consistía en crear un video ilustrativo en el que contara el relato con mi propia voz y en mi idioma materno (en este caso español) y además añadir en el mismo, tres sets de subtítulos: 1. Los subtítulos en español del relato que iba contando. 2. Un set de subtítulos que expresaran en Hangeul el sonido de las palabras en español. Y 3. una última línea de subtítulos con la traducción del relato al coreano.
Para mí, fueron dos los retos más importantes:
-La multiplicidad de lenguas implicadas: dado que gran parte de la cosmovisión indígena ha sido transmitida mediante la tradición oral, no abunda material escrito que pueda estudiarse para comprenderla mejor. El material escrito que existe está en gran parte en lengua indígena, con lo cual dependía de algunas traducciones al español hechas por los propios indígenas que han conservado su lengua y que también han aprendido el español y han hecho esfuerzos por conservar su cultura y la sabiduría de sus ancestros. Es así que la traducción del relato al coreano es, a su vez, una traducción del relato original al español; con lo cual, es una tarea compleja la reexpresión del relato original y simultáneamente buscar correspondencias entre las lenguas para preservar el significado y el sentido de la lengua de origen a la vez que se considera el léxico, la organización y el mensaje en la lengua de llegada.
-Partir del Hangeul para crear un sistema de escritura propio: como mencioné antes, una de las tareas principales del concurso era transmitir los sonidos y palabras del idioma español utilizando el Hangeul. Para ello, se nos daba la libertad de “no seguir las reglas” de escritura del Hangeul; por ejemplo, era permitido hacer combinaciones de consonantes y vocales que no se acostumbran en el idioma coreano, se podía utilizar símbolos que actualmente están en desuso, etc. todo con tal de replicar de la manera más fiel posible, los sonidos de un idioma en el otro.
Una gran ventaja es que tanto el coreano como el español son idiomas fonéticos (es decir, cada símbolo está asociado a un sólo sonido, con algunas cuantas excepciones en el coreano en el que el sonido de un símbolo puede variar según su posición en la palabra). Esto hace más sencillo encontrar correspondencias entre los fonemas y los grafemas del alfabeto español y del alfabeto coreano.
La creatividad entra en juego cuando hay que representar sonidos que no existen en la otra lengua (como el sonido de la letra “f” en español que no existe en coreano), o cuando quieren transmitirse particularidades de un dialecto como el caso del español costarricense y su distintiva pronunciación de la “rr” que tampoco existen en coreano.
Más allá de eso, por supuesto que la tarea de traducción tampoco es sencilla, en especial de una historia como ésta llena de mística, en la que era importante expresar y destacar el vínculo con la naturaleza. Mi trabajo está lejos de ser perfecto pero hice un buen esfuerzo para transmitir todo eso en idioma coreano. Además, conté con la ayuda de mi tutora Hwang Eunmi que me ayudó a corregir errores y a que la traducción fuera más fiel.
Definitivamente fue un ejercicio que disfruté hacer, me permitió aprender más sobre los pueblos originarios de mi país que lastimosamente no siempre reciben el valor que merece su aporte a la cultura e identidad nacional; además de estudiar más a fondo aspectos de la romanización del Hangeul para así poder hacer el proceso inverso; e indudablemente fue necesario estudiar y aprender muchas más partículas y herramientas gramaticales del idioma coreano aparte de las que ya conocía. Me siento honrada de que parte de la identidad de mi país haya llegado hasta Corea por medio de esta participación.
Finalmente, algo que me quedó muy grabado mientras trabajaba en hacer el video y que quisiera compartir con ustedes, es que entre las creencias religiosas que predominan en el mundo, usualmente se cree que al morir “vamos al cielo” o que el paraíso está en el cielo y que el infierno está abajo. Sin embargo, los Bribrís y Cabécares consideran que el paraíso está abajo, que al morir volvemos a la tierra, porque de ella venimos.
