Pour la mission de septembre, « Dive Into Korean Literature », j’aimerais recommander le roman The Red Palace de l’auteure coréo-canadienne June Hur (허주은), paru en 2023 chez Feiwel & Friends. The Red Palace a lieu en 1758, durant le règne du roi Yeongjo, et l’intrigue est librement basée sur la vie du prince Jangheon (aussi appelé le prince Sado). Le personnage principal du roman, Hyeon, est la fille illégitime d’un noble, qui s’est consacrée à ses études en soins infirmiers afin de se trouver un moyen d’avancer dans la vie. Enfin, à l’âge de 17 ans, elle est engagée par le palais de Changdeok, mais lors de son premier quart de travail, quatre femmes sont assassinées, et l’ancienne formatrice de Hyeon devient la principale suspecte. Hyeon et un jeune inspecteur de police unissent leurs forces pour découvrir la vraie personne coupable—qui risque d’être nul autre que le terrifiant prince héritier.
The Red Palace est la troisième des quatre romans écrits par Hur jusqu’à date, dont chacun raconte l’histoire d’une jeune femme d’une période différente de la dynastie Joseon qui doit résoudre un mystère. Honnêtement, je les recommande tous, mais j’ai choisi celui-ci comme mon préféré parce que le personnage principal exerce un métier (c’est également le cas dans son premier roman, The Silence of Bones, où le protagoniste est une damo, une servante affectée au bureau de police). J’ai toujours aimé imaginer comment serait ma vie, quel métier j’exercerais, si je vivais dans une autre époque historique. Alors, j’ai aimé apprendre sur le métier de Hyeon, comment elle s’est qualifiée pour devenir infirmière de palais, en quoi consistait sa routine quotidienne, etc.
J’ai aussi trouvé très intéressant la façon dont l’auteure a développé les rapports entre Hyeon et ses parents. Les enfants illégitimes nés d’un père noble et d’une mère de classe inférieure représentaient un dilemme social à l’époque, et les rapports compliqués parmi Hyeon, son père et sa mère (et l’épouse et les enfants légitimes de son père aussi) reflètent cela. Hyeon se sent non désirée et elle se trouve marginalisée dans la société à cause de son statut d’enfant illégitime ainsi qu’en raison de son genre. Malgré cela, Hyeon croit en elle-même, et c’est comme ça qu’elle réussit à surmonter sa peur non seulement pour résoudre le mystère, mais pour tenter sa chance en matière d’amour auprès de l’inspecteur de police qui l’apprécie sans tenir compte de sa classe sociale. Je suis une personne plutôt timide dans ce genre d’affaires, alors j’ai beaucoup admiré le courage de Hyeon.
