The Netflix series XO, Kitty, has become a unique bridge between cultures, blending teen romance with the vibrant setting of Seoul and the internationally beloved style of Korean dramas. A spin-off to the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, film series, the shows follow Kitty Song Covey as she navigates friendship, love and identity at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS). With the upcoming third season introducing new storylines and characters, actor Sule Thelwell joins the cast, bringing a fresh perspective to the evolving narrative. As the series expands its world, new characters help deepen the show’s themes of cultural exchange, global friendship and self-discovery.
In this interview, Thelwell shares his thought on joining the popular Netflix series, his experience being part of a production closely connected to Korean culture, and what viewers can look forward to in the highly anticipated new season.
The following are excerpts from an email interview with Thelwell from March 3 to 12.
1.You are joining XO, Kitty in its upcoming season. What excited you the most about becoming part of a series that connects international audiences with Korean culture?
Honestly, the most exciting part for me was the chance to connect with Korean culture firsthand—especially the food. From the audition stage I was intrigued by the idea of living in Seoul. Awesomely enough, that’s actually how my agent told me I booked the job. He called me while I was asleep. I woke up an hour later to a text that simply read, “Do you want to go to 🇰🇷?” But the most fulfilling moment was being able to share that experience with my younger cousin, who’s dreamed of living in Korea since she was ten years old. She teared up the moment she arrived, and by the time she—and my sister—were leaving, we were all tearing up. We proudly brought a likkle (little) bit of Jamaica to Korea—and lovingly took a likkle (little) bit of Korea back home with us.

2.The series is set in Seoul and highlights many aspects of Korean culture. What was it like for you working on a production so closely connected to Korea?
It was beautifully transformative. The city inspired me to think broader. Seeing the incredible success companies like Lotte have achieved within a single generation really fueled my belief in how far dreams can go. The cast taught me a lot too—about the food, the party scene, and different social etiquette whenever we’d hang out. I think either Gia or Sang Heon once told me I had very proper chopstick skills! The crew were amazing as well. They encouraged my curiosity, played games with me, shared little cultural tidbits and really fed into my learning. I was told that my name roughly translates to “seeker,” like in hide and seek. At first, it was difficult to navigate since I can’t read Korean, and it took me a while before I felt confident taking the train on my own. But once I got my bearings, I started going on mini solo adventures around the city—taking photos, finding cool clothes, eating incredible food, and making some really beautiful friendships along the way. It felt like a very special moment in the gallery of my life— and I hope I get to visit again soon.

3.While working on XO, Kitty Season 3, did you have the opportunity to experience Korean traditions, food, or daily life that left a strong impression on you?
One thing that really stayed with me—almost as much as the food—is the cleanliness of Seoul. There are virtually no bins, which I’d never experienced before, and yet the city is mostly spotless. Everyone really does their part to manage their trash, and it’s a beautiful thing to witness. Also, there’s a particular rice gelato in Jamsil that I got almost every day I could. Fun fact: I don’t have a sweet tooth at all—and I generally don’t even like ice cream—but that one was undeniable. I’ve been recommending it ever since. Another thing Korea reminded me of is how interactive food can be. There’s a real artistry to crafting your own perfect bite—being given amazing ingredients and getting to orchestrate the journey of your meal. I’ve always been an adventurous eater, but now I walk around with my wooden chopsticks and spoon like it’s part of the fit.
4.Without giving away spoilers, what can viewers look forward to from your character in the new season?
He’s definitely the wild card this season—you never quite know what he’s going to do or say next. He’s fiercely loyal to Min Ho, and sometimes that loyalty leads him into some… questionable decisions. But beneath that, I hope audiences connect with Marius’ journey as a young man finding the courage to feel. You can expect bellyfuls of laughter, some jaw-dropping dialogue, a likkle (little) bit of shock—and a huge dollop of charm.

5.Do you have a message for global audiences who are excited to see the next chapter of XO, Kitty Season 3?
The gang is definitely growing up this season, and I’m excited for people to see that unfold. In a show that’s already very diverse, we’re introducing even more representation, and I hope audiences around the world find even more to connect with. And Marius tells me he’s very excited to meet you all. This season is going to be fun.
Through the diverse characters and Seoul-centered setting, the show reflects the growing interest in Korean entertainment and the power of storytelling to bring cultures together. As fans eagerly await the release of the new season, his addition to the cast promises to bring new dynamics and perspectives to the beloved story.
