Celebrating Korea’s National Day with the Korean Ambassador to Norway
On Thursday, September 25, a reception was held at the residence of H.E. Ambassador Seo Min-jeong, of the Republic of Korea to Norway, in Oslo to celebrate Korea’s National Foundation Day (개천절, Gaecheonjeol), which literally means “opening of the heavens.” The event brought together over a hundred guests, including members of Norway’s political, cultural, and diplomatic communities, as well as representatives of the Korean community such as teachers, students, celebrities, and taekwondo masters. The celebration honored one of Korea’s most meaningful national holidays, commemorating the legendary founding of the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, by Dangun Wanggeom in 2333 BCE.

The residence itself carries historical and architectural significance and was completed in 1969. The building was designed by Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig, best known for the iconic Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen) in Tromsø. Before becoming the official residence of the Korean ambassador to Norway, it served as the offices of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Japanese company Nissan. The Korean government acquired the property in 1982 and it has since stood as a symbol of Korea’s diplomatic presence in Norway.

The reception began with a beautiful vocal performance by soprano Ms. Juhee Kang, who opened the program with the national anthems of both Korea and Norway. This symbolized mutual respect and friendship between the two nations. Her moving rendition set a dignified tone for the evening and was warmly received by the audience.

H. E. Ambassador Seo Min-jeong expressed her gratitude to the distinguished guests and reflecting on the importance of the National Foundation Day as a celebration of Korea’s heritage, unity and enduring spirit. She noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Korea’s Liberation. She reflected on the country’s remarkable journey from colonial hardship and postwar recovery to becoming a thriving democracy and global leader in culture and innovation. She mentioned how NORMASH (the Norwegian Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) contributed during the Korean War, when over 600 Norwegian doctors and nurses treated more than 90,000 patients and expressed appreciation for Norway’s continued friendship and cooperation.

Deputy Speaker of the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament), Mr. Morten Wold, delivered congratulatory remarks describing Korea as one of Norway’s key partners in Asia. He highlighted the two nations’ historic friendship, expanding cooperation in trade and their shared commitment to democratic values. Mr. Wold also emphasized the importance of updating existing trade frameworks and strengthening collaboration in global initiatives. He concluded with a toast to the continued friendship between Korea and Norway. This year also marks 66 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Norway, established on March 2, 1959.

The evening’s musical program continued with Ms. Juhee Kang’s enchanting performance of “Musetta’s Waltz” from Puccini’s La Bohème. Starting her song among the guests before moving to the stage, she created an intimate and captivating connection with the audience. Afterward, she performed the beloved Korean folk song “Arirang,” captivating guests with her graceful voice and emotional interpretation of one of Korea’s beloved folk songs.

After the formal program, guests enjoyed a traditional Korean buffet featuring a variety of dishes highlighting Korea’s culinary heritage. To complement the meal, guests were served bokbunja-ju, a rich and fragrant Korean black raspberry wine. Each dish reflected Korea’s harmony of taste, color and presentation.

The reception was not only a celebration of Korea’s great foundation but also a testament to the country’s modern diplomacy and vibrant cultural outreach. The evening reflected the strong and growing ties between Korea and Norway, built on friendship, respect and a shared commitment to peace and cooperation. I was honored to be among the invited guests at this special event commemorating Korea’s National Foundation Day.
