[MISSION] Busan International Film Festival: A Reflection of the World on the Korean Screen
2025-09-17
Stories live on when they are retold. Memories remain alive when we recall the emotions of the very first moment. Films weave stories and memories together, leaving traces that continue to resonate with emotions beyond the screen.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), celebrated with a renewed spirit and distinctive charm. When it was first established in 1996, there was uncertainty as to whether Busan could shine every year through this ambitious initiative. What began as a bold idea and modest efforts reflecting broad dreams and visions has now become a global force in the film industry.
From September 17 to 26, 2025, the shores of Busan will once again be illuminated by stories from across the globe, told through the lens of cinema at BIFF.
As I browsed the festival’s official website—exploring its archives, schedule, participating films, and awards—I felt an overwhelming excitement and a growing desire to one day experience the festival in person.

The festival opens with a breathtaking work: ‘No Other Choice’, directed by the acclaimed Korean filmmaker ‘Park Chan-wook’. Watching a clip of the film on the official site, I was struck by its masterful blend of visual and sound design. Park, celebrated for his thought-provoking and globally influential works, once again proves his ability to bring Korean cinema to the world stage.
The film tells a gripping and mysterious story of a detective entangled in the disappearance of a famous artist. As he delves deeper, he uncovers a chain of dark secrets linking her artistic past to her present reality. With its exploration of human psychology, ‘No Other Choice’ seamlessly combines psychological suspense with twisted drama.
This film is just one among 241 films from 64 countries featured in this year’s lineup, offering a true panorama of world cinema. The festival presents a rich tapestry of themes and genres, from films tackling pressing social issues to those exploring identity and the search for self. In doing so, BIFF fosters dialogue between cultures and demonstrates that art is a universal language requiring no translation.

Through cinema, art mirrors reality and builds bridges that connect hearts, telling stories of hope even in the darkest of times. In the inspiring world of art—particularly film—Busan speaks in a single language: a language of peace, reminding us that stories, whether on screen or within the theater’s seats, have the power to bring memories to life and keep narratives ever flowing.
