Cuando se escucha la palabra “Kim Chi”, lo primero que se viene a la mente es la comida. Sin embargo en esta ocasión no se hablará sobre ese famoso platillo coreano, sino sobre un artista del drag, también de origen coreano. KimChi es una persona a la que he admirado desde su aparición en televisión. Su estética me pareció bastante única, su personalidad carismática y divertida me cautivaron, convirtiéndome en su fan cuando yo era una adolescente. Ahora siendo una adulta quise que más personas conocieran un poco sobre este gran artista.
Sang-Young Shin, mejor conocido como KimChi, es un artista drag nacido en Estados unidos, pero de raíces coreanas. Comenzó su carrera como KimChi en Chicago en el años 2012. Define su estética drag como “un personaje de anime de acción en vivo cuya estética de moda podría describirse como tapete biónico. Imagino que mi aura es una variedad de colores ultravioleta que arroja brillo. Celebro todas las cosas lindas y extrañas”.
Ganó popularidad en el año 2016 luego de participar en la octava temporada del exitoso show estadounidense Rupaul´s Drag Race, el cual es una competencia de drag, KimChi ganó el primer desafío de la temporada y se volvió bastante querida por el fandom del show debido a su estética estrambótica, su personalidad alegre y su humor. Sin embargo, fue criticada por no saber usar tacones adecuadamente. Uno de sus momentos más recordados durante el show ocurrió en el reto de Snatch Game, el cual consiste en imitar o parodiar a una persona famosa. KimChi decidió parodiar a un conocido político asiático. Aunque no ganó ese reto, su actuación fue muy comentada por el fandom. Gracias a su excepcional talento, logró llegar a la final de Drag Race; sin embargo, quedó en tercer lugar, siendo superado por Naomi Smalls (segundo lugar) y Bob The Drag Queen (ganador).
No haber ganado su temporada no detuvo a KimChi. Se involucró en diversos proyectos, tanto dentro de Drag Race como fuera del concurso. En 2017 fue invitado a la Facultad de Comunicación y Bellas Artes de la Universidad Loyola Marymount para un evento llamado “Una noche fabulosa con KimChi: Explorando la identidad de género a través del drag”. Durante ese mismo año, realizó una presentación en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona para la Semana del Patrimonio Asiático y la Semana del Orgullo. Dentro de los proyectos de Drag Race formó parte de Werq The World, apareció en el especial navideño RuPaul´s Drag Race Holi-Slay Spectacular, Drag Race Celebrity y RuPaul´s Drag Race Superstar el juego móvil oficial del show. Además, gracias a su estilo exótico y extravagante, ha participado en distintas revistas de moda como Dazed, Plastik, Vogue y ELLE. También a colaborado con estrellas de Hallyu como Jo Kwon de 2AM y la supermodelo Park Soo Joo.
En el ámbito del maquillaje, después de su participación en Drag Race, colaboró con Sugarpill Cosmetics para crear diversos productos de maquillaje, entre ellos sombras de ojos y labiales líquidos. En 2019 anunció su propia marca de cosméticos de la mano de Toni Ko, fundadora de NYX Cosmetics y actualmente dueña de Bespoke Beauty Brands. Su marca se llama KimChi Chic Beauty, la cual actualmente se encuentra activa y es reconocida por sus empaques coloridos y por ser de gran calidad a un precio accesible.
Sang-Young Shin es un ejemplo de perseverancia, creatividad y amor al arte. A lo largo de su carrera, ha desafiado estereotipos y redefinido lo que significa ser Drag Queen, fusionando sus raíces culturales con una visión artística única. Su capacidad para reinventarse constantemente, superar críticas y destacar en un campo competitivo demuestra no solo su talento, sino también su determinación para seguir creciendo y expandiendo su impacto. Su enfoque innovador en el maquillaje y la moda junto con su autenticidad, ha inspirado a una nueva generación de artistas creativos que buscan expresarse sin límites.
