[Misi] Mengenal Sejarah Wanita Korea Melalui Buku ‘A History of Korean Women’ Terbitan Academy of Korean Studies
2024-09-23Center for International Affairs (CEFIA) didirikan pada bulan Maret tahun 2023 untuk menjalankan secara profesional tugas-tugas yang berkaitan dengan Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). AKS sendiri adalah markas besar untuk pendidikan dan penelitian yang berkaitan dengan studi tentang Korea (Korean studies). Sebagai jendela pertukaran di antara komunitas internasional dan Republik Korea, CEFIA memiliki misi menjadi mata bagi Korea untuk melihat dunia luar dan menyediakan pertukaran kebudayaan dan akademis secara multilateral bagi mereka yang berada di luar Korea untuk meningkatkan pemahaman akan kebudayaan Korea. Dalam rangka mencapai tujuan tersebut, CEFIA mengembangkan dan menyebarkan berbagai material untuk memperkenalkan Korea kepada dunia.
Perkenalan penulis untuk pertama kalinya dengan CEFIA adalah melalui kompetisi menulis esai ‘The Understanding Korea Contest 2024’ yang diumumkan melalui situs aks.ac.kr. Demi membantu pemahaman peserta akan tujuan kompetisi ini, CEFIA merujuk banyak material bertajuk besar ‘Understanding Korea’ kepada para peserta kompetisi. Material-material tersebut diterbitkan dalam bentuk buku berformat PDF yang dapat diunduh secara gratis. Beberapa buku bahkan diterbitkan dalam bahasa selain Inggris, yaitu Rusia, Spanyol, dan Perancis.
Material yang diterbitkan secara rutin adalah ‘Infokorea: An Essential Guide for Educators’, sebuah majalah yang memperkenalkan Korea kepada pembaca di luar negeri, terutama yang berprofesi sebagai pengajar, pembuat buku ajar, dan pendidik lain. Majalah ini juga menyediakan statistik terbaru tentang Republik Korea dan artikel-artikel yang berfokus pada sejarah, masyarakat, dan kebudayaan Korea. Majalah ‘Infokorea’ ini diharapkan dapat menjadi sumber referensi terpercaya bagi para penulis dan editor buku ajar, sekaligus materi persiapan yang mumpuni bagi para pengajar.
Akan tetapi, buku yang menarik perhatian penulis adalah dari seri ‘The Understanding Korea Series’ (UKS) volume ke-12 yang berjudul ‘A History of Korean Women’. Sampai saat ini, pemahaman penulis akan eksistensi wanita Korea hanya terbatas pada eksposur yang penulis terima melalui produk kebudayaan seperti drama Korea, musik K-pop, dan sastra Korea. Melalui ketiga produk kebudayaan tersebut, penulis memperoleh pengetahuan akan kehidupan sebagai wanita Korea hanya pada dua linimasa yang spesifik: masa jaman kerajaan dan masa modern setelah negara Korea berjalan sebagai negara yang berlandaskan demokrasi. Terdapat celah di dalam pemahaman penulis akan sejarah wanita Korea di antara kedua linimasa ini, sehingga membaca buku ‘A History of Korean Women’ memberikan pencerahan yang sangat berarti bagi penulis dalam rangka memahami kebudayaan Korea secara utuh.

Buku ‘A History of Korean Women’ ditulis oleh enam orang penulis wanita di dalam bahasa Korea dengan judul ‘Geullobeol Sidae-e igneun Hanguk Yeoseongsa’ (Reading Korean Women’s History in the Global Age) dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris oleh Academy of Korean Studies pada tahun 2021. Buku ini terdiri atas lima bab dan satu apendiks, serta bagian yang tak kalah menarik yaitu Kronologi Sejarah Wanita Korea pada bagian akhir buku. Selanjutnya penulis akan membahas buku ini berdasarkan kesan dan pengetahuan baru yang penulis dapatkan setelah membaca penjabaran tema yang diteroka oleh setiap penulis di dalam setiap babnya.
Bab 1 Wanita Korea pada Masa Prasejarah dan Kuno (Women in the Prehistoric and Ancient Period), ditulis oleh Kim Sun-joo
Di dalam bab ini, penulis Kim Sun-joo menjabarkan pembagian jender pada Masa Paleolitik di Semenanjung Korea yang dimulai setidaknya 600.000 tahun yang lalu. Penghidupan manusia pada masa itu adalah berburu dan di situlah pembagian jender didasarkan. Jender pria bertanggung jawab atas aktivitas berburu karena secara fisik mereka lebih superior dibandingkan jender wanita dari segi tinggi badan, kekuatan, dan mobilitas. Fungsi biologis berupa kehamilan dan menyusui menjadi dasar pemisahan jender wanita dari jender pria.
Ini tidak berarti jender wanita tidak memainkan peran biologis dan sosial yang penting di dalam komunitas Paleolitik. Seiring dengan perkembangan perabadan dari Jaman Batu ke Jaman Perunggu, wanita semakin memegang peran relijius dan politis yang penting. Pada jaman Tiga Kerajaan (Silla, Goguryeo, dan Baekje), wanita adalah elemen penting dalam mitos tentang para bapak pendiri kerajaan-kerajaan kuno, sebagai contoh tokoh Ungnyeo dalam mitos Dangun (mitos pendirian Kerajaan Gojoseon). Wanita mulai dilihat sebagai makhuk surgawi atau dengan kata lain tuhan dan dewi, sebagai contoh Unjesanseongmo (Ibu Kudus dari Gunung Unjesan) yang dipercaya mengendalikan hujan.
Selain ditempatkan sebagai tuhan atau dewi, pada masa itu wanita juga berperan sebagai pendeta yang memegang kekuasaan relijius. Sebagai contoh, Raja Namhae dari Kerajaan Silla membuat rumah ibadah dan menunjuk saudaranya Aro untuk menyelenggarakan upacara keagamaan (fungsi sebagai pendeta). Yang terakhir, pada masa kuno Korea wanita juga bisa menjadi penguasa. Sebagai contoh di Kerajaan Silla ada Ratu Seondeok (ratu pertama Korea), Ratu Jindeok, dan Ratu Jinseong. Hal ini mengesankan karena para ratu tersebut dapat memerintah ketika sistem pemerintahan dan kekuasaan dikendalikan dan dimonopoli oleh pria.
Membahas sejarah wanita pada masa ini tidak bisa terlepas dari proses prokreasi yang berlangsung di Semenanjung Korea. Pada masa ini mulai ditetapkan aturan dan kebiasaan untuk pernikahan yang bervariasi antardaerah. Setelah menilik masyarakat kontemporer Korea yang patriarkal, penulis cukup terkejut akan kebiasaan seo’okje yang mengijinkan wanita untuk pergi ke rumah suaminya hanya setelah ia melahirkan anak. Sebelum melahirkan anak, wanita tersebut masih bisa tinggal bersama keluarga asalnya dan memiliki hak akan warisan yang sama seperti saudara-saudara laki-lakinya.
Bab 2 Wanita Korea di Masyarakat Goryeo (Women in Goryeo Society), ditulis oleh Kwon Soon-hyung
Kerajaan Goryeo (918-1392) didirikan pada tahun 918 oleh Raja Taejo, seorang anggota elit lokal yang berasal dari Gaeseong. Pada masa ini wanita dilarang untuk menjadi penguasa (ratu) dan bertindak sebagai penyelenggara upacara keagamaan seperti pada jaman kuno. Akan tetapi, kebiasaan seo’okje masih diterapkan sehingga wanita tidak “hilang” dari keluarga mereka setelah menikah. Hal ini berubah setelah perang melawan Dinasti Yuan pada abad ke-13 yang berakhir dengan perjanjian damai pada tahun 1270. Setelah perang, Kerajaan Goryeo harus menerima putri-putri dari Yuan sebagai ratu di Korea, dan mengirim wanita Korea sebagai upeti kepada Dinasti Yuan.
Pertukaran ini juga menjadi pembuka penyebaran ajaran Neo-Konfusius yang menekankan sistem keluarga patriarkal yang mengutamakan kesucian wanita. Pada ajaran Neo-Konfusius peran wanita dibatasi sebagai menantu, istri, dan ibu. Wanita yang bijak (virtuous woman) pada masa itu adalah ia yang mengabdi pada mertua, suami, dan anak laki-lakinya. Pernikahan uxorilokal dimana wanita baru pindah ke rumah suaminya setelah memiliki anak (kebiasaan seo’okje), diganti dengan pernikahan patrilokal karena kekhawatiran munculnya ketidakpatuhan istri kepada suami yang berujung pada keretakan keluarga.
Bab 3 Wanita Korea di Masyarakat Joseon (Women in Joseon Society), ditulis oleh Chung Hae-eun
Dinasti Joseon berdiri selama 519 tahun (1392-1910) dan dipimpin oleh dua puluh tujuh raja-raja yang bermarga Yi. Pada masa itu populasi masyarakat dibagi menjadi kelas aristokrat (yangban), profesional, orang biasa, dan kasta rendah. Dinasti Joseon adalah pelopor untuk banyak produk kebudayaan Korea. Raja Sejong dari dinasti ini menciptakan Hangeul, aksara Korea yang sampai saat ini tersebar ke seluruh dunia untuk dipelajari oleh para pecinta kebudayaan Korea. Setelah Hangeul diciptakan, untuk pertama kalinya dalam sejarah Korea diciptakan buku untuk mendidik wanita akan tugas-tugasnya berjudul ‘Samganghaengsildo’ (Ilustrated Guide to the Three Bonds).
Pendidikan untuk wanita pada awalnya bertujuan untuk melatih wanita berpikir dan bertindak sesuai dengan tatanan sosial baru di Dinasti Joseon. Namun demikian, kehadiran Hangeul memutus rantai buta huruf pada wanita. Setelah abad ke-18 banyak wanita berperan penting di dalam bidang sastra dan keahlian lainnya. Selain itu, semakin banyak wanita berperan di dalam aktivitas ekonomi seperti menenun pakaian, memproduksi tekstil, bertani, berdagang, dan beternak. Wanita berperan sebagai manajer dalam ekonomi keluarga yang memastikan rumah tangga berjalan baik dan semua kebutuhan hidup tercukupi ketika para pria/suami berfokus pada karir dan pendidikan mereka.
Bab 4 Wanita Korea di Masyarakat Korea Modern (Women in Modern Korea), ditulis oleh Shin Young-sook
Sejarah wanita modern di Korea pada merujuk pada pembukaan pelabuhan-pelabuhan di Korea sampai ke akhir Dinasti Joseon dan akhir masa penjajahan Jepang. Pada masa modern ini, wanita dan masyarakat Korea berjuang melawan penjajahan sembari mengatasi gesekan-gesekan internal di sistem kehidupan Dinasti Joseon sendiri. Untuk melawan penjajahan, wanita modern Korea berpartisipasi dalam gerakan kemerdekaan anti-Jepang. Pada tahun 1920-an wanita modern Korean juga terlibat dalam berbagai gerakan untuk mengemukakan hak-hak wanita, sehingga muncul istilah ‘New Women’ (wanita baru) bagi para wanita yang sudah lebih terdidik dibanding masa-masa sebelumnya.

Wanita juga mulai berdemonstrasi untuk melawan sistem patriarkal dengan cara menentang pernikahan dini dan keberadaan selir. Dalam pergerakan melawan Jepang, wanita terlibat langsung dalam aktivitas dan penyediaan alat-alat militer. Meskipun masih dianggap sebagai warga negara kelas dua dan manusia yang lebih inferior daripada pria, wanita tidak tinggal diam setelah suami/anak laki-laki mereka tewas di medan perang, tapi mengambil alih kegiatan ekonomi dan berfokus pada keberlangsungan hidup. Pergerakan ini juga dipengaruhi oleh nilai-nilai Katolik/Kristen yang mengedepankan kesetaraan semua manusia, tanpa memandang jender dan kelas sosial. Organisasi-organisasi Katolik/Kristen bermunculan dan membuka akses pendidikan dan kesehatan baru bagi wanita.
Bab 5 Wanita Korea di Masyarakat Korea Kontemporer (Women in Contemporary Korea), ditulis oleh Lee Im-ha dan Chung Hyun-back
Ketika Semenanjung Korea dibebaskan dari kolonialisasi Jepang pada tanggal 15 Agustus 1945, wanita turun ke jalan-jalan menuntut dunia baru di mana pria dan wanita hidup berdampingan dengan hak-hak yang setara. Wanita mulai menuntut hak untuk memilih, hak untuk dipilih di sistem pemerintahan, penghapusan kesenjangan jender dalam hal gaji, dan penghapusan diskriminasi jender di bidang pendidikan. Perang Korea yang pecah pada tahun 1950 membuat semakin banyak wanita masuk ke bidang pertanian, industri, perdagangan, dan pelayanan publik. Ketidakhadiran pria di masyarakat semasa dan pascaperang telah memperkuat peran wanita dalam pertumbuhan ekonomi Korea.
Wanita bekerja sebagai buruh di pabrik, sebagai asisten di kantor, dan profesi lainnya. Setelah tahun 1997 hak-hak wanita semakin diperhatikan dan semakin banyak feminis berpartisipasi di dalam proses pembuatan kebijakan yang memihak wanita. Meskipun demikian, hal ini tidak menghambat perkembangan misogini, yaitu kebencian tidak berdasar dari jender pria ke jender wanita, yang sering memakan korban di dunia nyata dan di dunia maya. Akibat sistem patriarkal yang terlalu mengakar di kebudayaan masyarakat Korea, masih ada kesenjangan di antara kebijakan yang berbasis kesetaraan jender dengan apa yang dihadapi sehari-hari oleh wanita di masyarakat kontemporer Korea. Perjuangan memang masih panjang untuk mencapai kesetaraan jender yang sejati untuk semua warga negaranya.

Kesimpulan
Buku ‘A History of Korean Women’ ini telah membuka mata penulis akan sejarah panjang keberadaan dan kehidupan wanita Korea yang berhasil menghadapi tantangan dan keterbatasan pada berbagai jaman yang mereka hidupi. Usaha mereka untuk mengatasi prasangka dan kesulitan akibat sistem negara, agama, sosial, dan politik pada jaman mereka menjadi inspirasi bagi penulis yang juga adalah seorang wanita dengan peran istri dan ibu di masyarakat Indonesia saat ini.

Perjuangan jender wanita Korea untuk memperoleh hak-hak yang setara di dalam aspek kesehatan, pendidikan, pekerjaan, dan lainnya tentu dialami oleh banyak wanita lain dari berbagai latar belakang negara, suku, dan bangsa di berbagai belahan dunia lain. Membaca kisah perjalanan mereka adalah sebuah privilege yang memberikan kekuatan batin bagi penulis dan semoga bagi para pembaca lain dari seri ‘Understanding Korea’ ini.
