The Origin of the Boryeong Mud Festival
The history of the Boryeong Mud Festival is a narrative of transformation and resilience. In the early 1990s, Daecheon Beach (대천해수욕장 Daecheon Beach) in Boryeong (보령시) was known for its dirty waters and mud, making it unappealing to tourists. The local economy worsened when Boryeong's coal mines closed, plunging the region into crisis.
In 1994, Mayor 박상돈 (Park Sang-don) of Daecheon sought ways to revitalize Boryeong's economy when he saw a movie scene where a couple enjoyed a date covered in mud. Inspired by this, he decided to develop mud products as a tourist attraction using the mud from Daecheon Beach.
Mayor Park discovered that Boryeong mud had exceptional quality, according to a study by Dr. 김재백 (Jae-Bek Kim), a professor at Wonkwang University. This mud turned out to be harmless to the human body, and thus, Boryeong's first tourist business was born: the Daecheon Natural Mud Massage House, which opened in July 1994.

The First Mud Festival
Initially, the festival was a small-scale event, but thanks to publicity and the participation of foreign tourists, it quickly gained popularity. In September 1995, the Boryeong mud mask project received the grand prize in the National Administration Contest, boosting local management mindset and the economy.
In 1998, Professor 정강환 (Kang-Hwan Jeong) of Pai Chai University transformed the Boryeong Cultural Festival into a representative tourist event. He proposed focusing the festival on mud, and thus, from July 16 to 19, 1998, the first Boryeong Mud Festival was held at Daecheon Beach. The success of the festival exceeded all expectations.

Festival Growth and Recognition
Since then, the Boryeong Mud Festival has grown exponentially. In 2002, Professor Jeong received an honorary citizenship certificate from the city of Boryeong for his contribution to the festival. Today, the Boryeong Mud Festival is considered Korea's premier festival, designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
The festival has evolved thanks to the passion and constant efforts of public officials and volunteer citizens. It is now a global event that attracts thousands of tourists from around the world.
