A window into a nation’s heritage and a master of cultural diplomacy through entertainment, 'Running Man' seamlessly integrates traditional and modern Korean elements, weaving cultural and linguistic content into an engaging format. Whether you are a dedicated learner of the Korean language or simply interested in Korean culture, you may have heard of the Korean entertainment program 'Running Man'. It is the longest-running variety show in the history of entertainment programs in the Republic of Korea, offering more than mere amusement. From my experience watching and learning through it over the years, I will share insights that can help you learn and enjoy it as well.
The program first aired on July 11, 2010, broadcasting every Sunday on SBS. By mid-August 2025, it has surpassed 760 episodes and enjoys immense popularity both inside and outside the Republic of Korea. The core members from the show’s inception to today include 'Yoo Jae-suk', known as the “Nation’s MC,” who impresses with his intelligence, broad knowledge, strong memory, and precise understanding of Korean history; 'Kim Jong-kook', highly focused on sports and fitness, nicknamed “The Detective” for his sharp analysis; the main female member 'Song Ji-ho', known for her calm personality, physical strength, and swimming and diving skills; 'Haha', a father of three and a singer, who creates humorous situations with his quick wit and sarcasm; and the oldest member, 'Ji Suk-jin', who adds comedy with his direct style and remarks.
Several members joined later but left after a few years, such as 'Lee Kwang-soo', 'So Min', 'Gary', and 'Kang Ho-dong'. Currently, the newer members include 'Yang Se-chan' (joined in 2017), 'Ji Yi-yoon' (joined in summer 2024), and 'Daniel' (joined this year).

The program allows viewers to explore many exciting places in the Republic of Korea. It promotes tourism and has a strong economic impact, as many locations featured in the show have experienced significant tourist influx, from entertainment venues to traditional markets and cities. This summer, I watched an episode filmed in 'Gyeongju', which inspired me to visit, adding numerous sites to my travel wish list. I also appreciate how each episode highlights filming locations in Korean, whether in games or everyday expressions. This creates a tangible link between virtual entertainment and real-world exploration, leaving a deep impression on viewers’ perceptions and travel behaviors.
Linguistically, the show is a fantastic resource for language learners, offering authentic, real-life conversations in an enjoyable way. I often rewatch favorite episodes multiple times, noting down new words and expressions. As a variety program, it exposes viewers to unique vocabulary. Beyond traditional learning through books or courses, 'Running Man' teaches while entertaining. Through contemporary or innovative language games, viewers also learn famous sayings, wisdom, and cultural references in a fun way. Repeating the games reinforces not just language but Korean history and heritage. One two-hour episode provides an engaging educational journey linguistically, culturally, and historically, preparing viewers for future visits to Korea’s attractions.

The program excels in presenting Korea’s deep-rooted traditions and modern societal developments. Many episodes feature participants wearing Joseon-era attire, representing nobles or commoners, or immersing themselves in historical periods to deeply showcase Korean heritage. Through games, historical site visits, and traditional Korean food—either preparing or tasting it—the program blends entertainment with history. It also provides insights into contemporary Korean society, presenting creative solutions through gameplay. Beyond the past, it offers glimpses of everyday life in Korea, giving a deeper understanding of culture from a societal perspective.
'Running Man' also influences the Hallyu wave by inviting celebrities—singers, actors, and athletes—to promote their work indirectly while enjoying the diverse entertainment experience. It becomes a live window to current Korean dramas, movies, and music.

The show features traditional and innovative Korean games that aid language learners, such as 'Yut Nori', a telepathy game; 'Kawi Bawi Bo', commonly used in challenges; removing name cards from members’ backs, a staple game in most episodes; a drawing game where team members pass a word along a chain through sketches in Korean; 'Yang Se-chan'’s namesake game, where participants guess a celebrity’s identity based on questions; traditional Korean hide-and-seek; treasure hunts across cities and landmarks; and many games requiring focus, physical effort, or linguistic intelligence in Korean.
Even after 15 years of broadcasting, its global popularity continues to grow. The program has held international tours in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and other countries, with the most recent tour in 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Over its career, the program and its team have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize for the host in 2019 and 2024, Best Variety Program in 2024, a Grand Prize for a member in 2020, and the Golden Content Award the same year. These achievements reflect its enduring influence and value in Korean entertainment.
In conclusion, 'Running Man' is a versatile Korean entertainment program that intelligently promotes Korean culture, from tourism and authentic language exposure to acting as a Hallyu ambassador. Through strategic challenges, physical comedy, and engaging content, it serves as a cultural bridge connecting the Republic of Korea with the world. While one article cannot cover it entirely, I highly recommend the show for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in Korean language, history, traditions, and tourism.
