Commemorating Independence Movement Day: Kim Koo Refuge, A Testament to Courage and Friendship
2025-03-04On March 2nd, the day after Sam-il-Jeol, Korea's Independence Movement Day, we embarked on a journey to the historic city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang, China. Our destination: the Kim Koo Refuge, a place steeped in history and significance.
Kim Koo, a revered leader of the Korean independence movement and President of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, sought refuge in China in 1919. His tireless efforts against Japanese imperialism reached a climax on April 29, 1932, with the audacious bombing at Shanghai's Hongkou Park. In retaliation, the Japanese authorities offered a staggering 600,000 yuan bounty for his capture. To evade this relentless pursuit, Kim Koo found sanctuary in Jiaxing with the help of Chinese patriotic democrat Chu Fu-cheng and others, where he remained hidden for two years.

Our first stop was 76 Meiwan Street, a charming residence that once belonged to Chen Tongsheng, the foster son of Chu Fu-cheng. Built during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic period, this two-story brick and wood structure features two rooms and three depths, gracefully positioned by the southwestern lake. It was here, in May 1932, that Chu Fu-cheng arranged for Kim Koo to stay in a cozy south-facing building, offering a haven during tumultuous times.

The visit took an emotional turn as we admired the relief sculpture of Kim Koo, graciously donated by Korean actress Song Hye-kyo. The sculpture stands as a tribute to Kim Koo's unwavering spirit and the enduring bond between Korea and China.

Our exploration continued to 17 Rihuqiao, where several members of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and their families had also taken refuge. This site became a hub for independence movement efforts, with notable figures like Lee Dong-ning (이동녕), Kim Euihan Kim(김의한), Park Chan-ik(박찬익), and Um Hangsub(엄항섭) residing here with their families.

Kim Koo's leadership of the Provisional Government was crucial in the struggle for Korean independence. The Kim Koo Refuge in Jiaxing remains a powerful symbol of this fight and the remarkable friendship between Chu Fu-cheng and Kim Koo. Their shared story is cherished in the hearts of both nations, a testament to courage and solidarity in the face of adversity.

Our visit to these historic sites was not just a journey through time but also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. As we walked in the footsteps of these courageous individuals, we felt a profound sense of connection to the past and inspiration for the future.
