The Busan Infrastructure Corporation, also known as BISCO, has been organizing a special promotions unit called Young BISCO for 14 consecutive years. It is a platform where students from various universities in Busan come together to promote activities and facilities that are managed by BICSO, such as Busan Citizens Park, Yongdusan Park, and Taejongdae Resort Park. This year is the first time where international students were also selected to be part of the team, with members from Mongolia, Taiwan and Singapore. The activities were conducted from July to November this year, where the students had to participate in a wide range of activities that are managed by BISCO, and work in teams to promote them in social media.
One of the activities that the students had to work together for was creating multi-language posters that promoted the Moonlight Garden, which is located at the Rooftop Observatory in Jagalchi Market (자갈치시장). Jagalchi Market is one of the most iconic and famous traditional markets located in Busan, as it is the largest seafood market in Korea. Many visitors and tourists pay a visit the market to enjoy fresh seafood and raw fish, which are freshly prepared by the welcoming stall owners. On top of domestic visitors from all over the country, the famous market is extremely popular among international visitors as well, especially among Japanese and Taiwanese tourists. Therefore, the Young BISCO team was assigned the important task of creating posters in various languages in teams, in order to promote the beautiful Moonlight Garden, located at the rooftop of the market.
I had the honor to be selected as one of the global Young BISCO this year, where I could learn more about BISCO and the activities and facilities that are mananged and maintained by BISCO. Although I was unaware about BISCO before I joined this year, I had the opportunity to learn and participate in many activities and visit facilities that are managed by BISCO, such as the Gwangan Grand Bridge Exhibition Hall. Through visiting the Exhibition Hall, I was able to learn in-depth about how BISCO maintains and manages the Gwangan Grand Bridge, which is the largest double-decker bridge in Korea and one of the landmarks of Busan. It was an eye-opener as I was able to learn a lot about the famous landmark from dedicated staff from BISCO, who explained to us patiently about each exhibit in the hall. We also had the opportunity to participate in a meeting, where we could contribute our ideas on how to promote the Gwangan Grand Bridge Exhibition Hall.
On December 26th, a closing ceremony was held at the headquarters of BISCO, where Young BISCO were awarded their Certificate of Completion. In addition, four of the 9 students were presented the Excellent Supporters award for their outstanding participation and dedication during the five months. It was one of the most rewarding aspects of the closing ceremony, as our hard work was being recognized and awarded for contributing to the corporation. At the event's conclusion, the students shared their reflections, and there was also a job counselling session with one of the seniors from BISCO, who answered our questions on job interviews and job preparation process.
Being one of the international students who had the opportunity to participate as Young BISCO this year, it was a great experience as it allowed me to develop organizational and interpersonal skills as I had to work in teams and interact with other students in order to complete the tasks assigned to me, while managing my studies as an international student as well. I would recommend other international students in Korea to participate in similar activities and programs, as they provide opportunities for students to network and interact with other students, while having a fulfilling time in Korea.
