The Book That Will Teach You to Live as Yourself - I Decided to Live as Me by Kim Suhyun
2024-12-16Have you ever stopped doing something you love because you felt someone was judging you? Do you spend hours on social media wishing your life were as great as what you see online? Do you worry about things that haven't happened yet, or feel ashamed of things that shouldn't make you feel embarrassed?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, I Decided to Live as Me is the book you need to read. Not only will it inspire you to live your best life and understand that no one and nothing in this world is perfect, but, most importantly, it will help you fully love yourself.
Written and illustrated by Kim Suhyun and translated into English in 2024 by Anton Hur, this short book is an incredible guide filled with wisdom about life. Each lesson challenges you to reflect and ask yourself: Am I living to make myself happy, or am I just trying to make others happy?
The book offers many lessons throughout its six chapters. One of the main messages is that the only expectations you need to meet are your own. We usually spend a lot of our time trying to meet other people’s standards, but this book reminds us that true happiness comes from ourselves. It encourages us to embrace our authentic selves.
Suhyun also writes about unhappiness, reminding us that it’s universal. So many of us hide our problems and sadness, but the book teaches us it’s okay to not be okay sometimes, everyone has happy and sad moments.
Asking for help is another important message in the book. “When things are hard, say they are hard” is a simple yet powerful reminder that it’s okay to lean on others. The book also reminds us that everything worthwhile takes time and that we don’t have to rush our journey.
For me, if I had to describe this book in one word, it would be revealing. Growing up, technology and social media shaped so many aspects of my life, including how I saw myself. Social pressure was always there, making me feel I had to meet impossible standards. But this book changed my perspective: People will never like us enough, we’ll always make mistakes, and it’s okay to love what others don’t. It’s okay to decide to live as me.
