Dimanche 29 septembre 2024 se déroulait, à l’hôtel RYSE à Hongdae, le vernissage de l’exposition de l’artiste Cubain Pedro de Habana Moka Monster. Un événement marqué aussi par un petit concert de la chanteuse, guitariste et compositrice MEMI pour inaugurer l’exposition en puissance. L’artiste a aussi répondu à quelques-unes de mes questions que vous retrouverez dans l’article.
L’art de Habana Moka Monster
Pedro, ou Habana Moka Monster, est originaire de Cuba. Depuis six ans maintenant, il a posé ses valises en Corée du Sud. Passionné de skate, de rock et surtout de café, il a réussi à combiner le tout dans son art : dessiner sur des planches de skate.
À travers ces œuvres, on peut facilement faire le lien avec les dessins qui ornent les planches de skate depuis plus de quarante ans. Parmi les plus connues, Santa Cruz, dont l’inspiration est assez équivoque avec ce style très coloré, dynamique rempli de formes agressives, dans la pure tradition de l’artiste Jim Phillips. Un bel hommage y est rendu à travers les planches de Pedro qui a su trouver une identité qui lui est propre !
Une dizaine de planches étaient exposées. Le style de l’artiste très colorées et cartoonesque avec ces personnages hybrides témoigne de l’impact fort de la culture pop. Il nous a par exemple évoqué l’inspiration de personnages de jeux vidéo, comme Mario avec un de ses dessins présentant une cafetière en armure de chevalier, prête à se battre.
Oui, oui, une cafetière ! Une moka plus exactement. La machine à café emblématique de Cuba entre autres, est l’élément central de son œuvre. Passionné par le café, Pedro a ramené tout ce qui l’animait à cet objet du quotidien pour en faire un personnage aux multiples facettes. Une idée amusante qui m'a fasciné et rappelé aussi mon adolescence !
Interview de l’artiste
J’ai profité de cette rencontre pour demander à Pedro si je pouvais lui envoyer quelques questions sur l'exposition pour en savoir un peu plus sur lui. Il a très gentiment accepté de me répondre et voici notre échange.
Bonjour, est-ce que tu peux déjà te présenter ?
Salut, mon nom est Pedro, l’artiste de Habana Moka Monster (Instagram : @habana_moka_monster). Je viens de la Havane, à Cuba et je vis en Corée du Sud depuis six ans.
Tu te souviens de la première planche que tu as dessinée ? Comment t’es venu l’idée ?
La première planche que j'ai dessinée est un mélange entre une tasse de café et un monstre avec un couteau planté dans la langue, ce qui est en fait un totem pour chasser les mauvaises pensées dans mon pays. L'idée m'est venue lorsque j'ai ouvert mon propre café ici à Séoul, et j'ai essayé de suivre cette amusante tradition cubaine consistant à placer ce totem à l'entrée d'une maison ou d'un commerce.
La base de ton travail c’est la Moka (machine à café). J’ai également vu dans l’un de tes posts Instagram que, pour toi, “le café c’est le nirvana”. Raconte-nous comment tu as réussi à combiner ton art avec cet objet en particulier.
Je suis un grand amateur de café, pour moi, le café signifie le repos, la détente, le début d'une nouvelle journée, le karma, etc... C'est pourquoi l'idée d'une cafetière moka associée au bouddhisme m'est venue à l'esprit, et j'ai réfléchi à ça sur un skateboard.
Quelle est ta source d’inspiration principale pour tes personnages ?
La principale source d'inspiration pour mes personnages c’est l'idée que tous les objets ont une âme sous forme de monstre, attendant d'être révélés dans ce monde.
Les planches de skate sont aussi des objets de collections que l’on peut admirer pour les différents dessins propres à chaque marque. Il y en a une en particulier qui t’as marqué et inspiré ?
Ce qui m'a inspiré, c'est le logo unique de Santa Cruz (marque de skate), la Scream Hand, créée par le légendaire artiste de skateboard Jim Phillips. Une autre de mes inspirations est l'art du skateur Steve Caballero.
Est-ce que tu prévois de développer ton art vers d’autres méthodes, où tu préfères t’en tenir aux planches comme support ?
J’aime dessiner sur les planches de skate, mais je suis ouvert pour étendre mon art vers d’autres médiums. J’aime les nouveaux challenges.
Un aspect unique de cette exposition est la présence de la chanteuse et guitariste MEMI lors de l'ouverture de ton vernissage. Comment cette rencontre s'est-elle produite ?
Cette collaboration vient après que j’ai été contacté par l’émission de télé My Neighbor Charles (diffusée sur KBS 1TV). Ils m’ont proposé de faire une collaboration entre mon art et celui de MEMI.
Qu'apprécie-tu dans le style de MEMI, et y a-t-il une chanson en particulier que tu préfères ?
J'aime tout dans le style de MEMI, car je l'aime non seulement en tant qu'artiste, mais aussi en tant qu’épouse et fidèle compagne. Parmi ses chansons, ma préférée est “Guitar Pick”, car j'adore les souvenirs du moment de sa création.
Enfin, est-ce que tu es heureux de cette exposition, surtout en Corée du Sud ? D’autres sont prévues ?
Je suis plus que satisfait du résultat de cette première exposition et extrêmement reconnaissant envers toutes les personnes impliquées dans sa création et son exécution. Pour l'instant, je n'ai pas d'exposition future prévue, mais je vous garantis que vous entendrez à nouveau parler de Habana Moka Monster dans un avenir pas trop lointain.

Le busking inaugural de MEMI
Avant de se rendre à l'exposition, un concert en extérieur était organisé avec l’artiste rock MEMI. Accompagné de ses musiciens, la chanteuse et guitariste et envoyé une énergie folle qui résonnait dans les rues de Hongdae. Fans et curieux se sont joints à l'événement et MEMI a interprété quelques sons de son répertoire, dont Bassist, Waikiki et ma préférée Guitar Pick.
Hyemi Kim de son vrai nom, a débuté en 2012 avec le groupe 24Hours, puis a formé un groupe indépendant, Seoulmoon en 2016 avec notamment l’artiste Luli Lee, autre talentueuse figure de la scène rock coréenne. C’est en 2022 qu’elle démarre en solo avec le single Hate U et après plusieurs single, elle sort son premier EP intitulée M3MI en décembre 2023. Je vous conseille aussi d’écouter son dernier titre I’m Broken qui montre l’évolution très intéressante du style de MEMI.
Duo dans la vie de tous les jours, le couple Pedro et Hyemi ont aussi joué le rôle de duo lors de l’exposition, non seulement avec cette collaboration, mais aussi en présentant les œuvres de Habana Moka Monster et en répondant aux questions du public. S’en est suivi une séance photo et dédicace qui a pu ravir les fans (dont moi !).
