In a bid to learn more about Korean culture and lifestyle, I found out that every month of the year, Korea.net, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and KOCIS releases a webzine and magazine Korea that is very informative and educational. Every month, the publication has a new and different theme on aspects of Korean culture, there are also different columns and content that look into the lifestyle, travels, policy, food. Language to mention a few that it focuses on.
For the year 2024, The Korea.net webzine has been published for 7 months. The most amazing thing is that The Webzine can be read on Korea.net website and the Magazine Korea is available at the 35 Korean Cultural Centers and diplomatic missions abroad . Magazine Korea can also be downloaded as Pdf or Ebook from Korea.net. The January 2024 edition theme was focused on Plug into Kpop, February 2024 theme was New wave of Classical music, while March 2024 was on Getting Ahead of Game. April 2024 was on Tab into the webtoon World and May 2024 looked at Korean Literature broadens Horizon . June 2024 theme was Korean street dance, For the month of July 2024 which has been released has a theme related to the Cinema.
Wave
Getting to the end of the first quarter of the year June and beginning the new quarter in July, I have realized that I have learned a lot about Korea from the Koreanet webzine and magazine since the beginning of the year. For example, the Column section on page 6 looks at the month's theme. For example in the February edition Column session, I learnt about Korean classical music and how its scenes have developed overtime, looking at the first generation from “the modernization and industrialization that followed Korea’s liberation from colonial rule in 1945” the second generations from the 1950s, The third generation from the 1990s. This column also made me learn about Korean classic performer who have won international awards eg violinist Kyung-wha Chung who won Levenntritt competition in 1967.
Other parts of the magazine and webzine looks at Spotlight 1 in page 12 and spotlight 2 in page 18, Explore in page 22, Experience in page 28, Monthly Issue is always on page 34 and Recipe is on page 36. I like the recipe page a lot because I get to learn about a Korean dish , its history , how to cook it. For example in May 2024 edition, I learnt about Tteokbokki and its origin, what it is made from eg rice tteok or wheat tteok. Also the different varieties of Tteokbokki and the sauces used like the regular Tteokbokki, , Gireumtteobokki, Gungjungtteobokki, Jjangtteobokki to mention a few. There was also a recipe on how to cook Rose Tteokbokki abd Pizza cup Tteokbokki with a video to watch the process on youtube.
Other sections of the webzine and magazine include Art + Future on page 40, While in Korea on page 44, Policy Review on page 48, alsoCurrent ent Korea on page 50, Global Korea on page 52 and confusing words in page 54. I also enjoy reading the confusing Word page which looks at a Korean word , gives its definition and breaks it down whilst giving examples. In the July 2024 monthly issue of confusing word section, the word was “ Uisa” which means Doctor and also means Intention
Other interesting things make Magazine worth having , this is the Make You Own recipe book which is an area to collect monthly recipe postcard provided in the Koreanet magazine
