My trip to Woolwich Works in Arsenal Of Sound Yama Warashi at the Shilla ensemble discovered the sound of South Korea and Japan.
2023-06-06I went on the trip to Royal Borough Greenwich to watch the performance event called Arsenal of sounds at the cafe and its round the world journey in music reaches East Asians to welcome two forward thinking acts. The evening was opened with music from the Korean Peninsula where the members of the Shilla Ensemble were born. The group blends Korean folk songs with court music as well as some contemporary pieces. The Shilla is a Korean traditional music and dance group based in the UK, Korean traditional culture which is inspired by philosophy of shilla dynasty is one of the most culturally affluent periods of Korean history. Performances by the ensemble typically include musical and dance works of varying and traditional repertory by newly composed pieces and based on a flexible music making process. Hyelim Kim is a Korean performer, composer and researcher who believes that the ensemble's Korea heritage will act as an artistic inspiration for the contemporary and cosmopolitan environment of the UK. Yama Warashi is a Japanese musical project formed by the mountain spirit of the Japanese musical nature worshipping dance party. Yoshino plays keyboard and percussing while singing in her tongue about everything from mycelium to nuclear power. Warashi cites Japanese folk dance jazz and traditional rhythms from Africa as influences with unique and genre defining live shows for the group to listen and relate to Japanese traditions.
Talking about the most beautiful professional Korean traditional dancer, Dr Ye Rin Lee (yenn_dance)
Dr Ye Rin Lee (yenn_dance) is a professional Korean traditional dancer based in London and Seoul. She has been trained and performed traditional and contemporary dance for more than 20 years. Ye Rin went to one of the most outstanding art schools in South Korea, the National High School of Korean Traditional Music and Dance (Gukak High School) and also completed BA in Dance at Kyunghee University in South Korea. Since she moved to London in 2016, Ye Rin graduated MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship – Theatre and Performance Pathway at Goldsmiths, University of London. Additionally, she has been performing and teaching various traditional and contemporary dance performances in different cities in the UK, collaborating with the UK Universities; Manchester, York, SOAS, Sheffield, and Coventry.
Ye Rin is a screendance artist and dance researcher completing her PhD in dance studies, “Screendance Activism, Online Platforms and Korean Political Performances”, at the University of Roehampton. Her films were selected by various screendance festivals and screened in different countries, such as the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Greece, Brazil, Portugal, and Georgia.
When I met her for the first time, Ye Rin taught me and all my classmates about ‘Ganggangsullae’, a traditional Korean circle dance. For the past three years, she has introduced different types of traditional dance at K-pop Academy in the UK.
And then I went to the Woolwich Works to see her dance under the ‘Arsenal of Sounds’ performance. She performed the traditional ‘Hallyangmu’ and contemporary dance with the music ‘Chimhyangmu’. She also taught the audience some traditional arm movements with the Korean folk song ‘Arirang’.
Dr Ye Rin Lee has taught the Korean language for five years in London to all K-pop and K-drama fans. She used to work at Lingoclass (an Asian Language school) as a senior Korean instructor, teaching the Korean language and culture. Moreover, she worked for Google company and Frieze (an international contemporary art fair) to introduce the Korean language and culture.
