K-Pop girl group TRI.BE is getting ready for its first time in Brazil. The septet - formed by members Songsun, Kelly, Hyunbin, Jia, Soeun, Mire, and Jinha, who's currently on hiatus due to health reasons - is part of the Asia Star Festival line-up and will perform in São Paulo on July 7th, alongside other Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai artists.
A couple of weeks before the concert, I talked to them via email about their expectations, their Brazilian fans, and how proud they are to be taking Korean culture across the world.
How excited are you to finally come to Brazil?
Brazil has always been of our top wish-to-visit countries so we’re very excited to finally go! We can’t wait to perform for our Brazilian fans and experience the energy of Brazil. We heard that the Brazilian audience knows how to party so we’re looking forward to seeing it for ourselves.
Do you usually notice your Brazilian fans on social media?
Or course! We noticed that we have a lot of supportive fans from Brazil; we actually translate a lot of the comments so we can read them! Everyone is so nice and supportive, we love it.
How does it feel to know you are loved all the way across the world?
We’re always very thankful for the amount of support we receive internationally. We would love to visit everyone to get to see them in person and we’re trying our best to visit as many countries as we can. Our fans are the ones who keep us going so thank you so much and we’ll try even harder so that our music and energy can reach everybody all around the world!
How familiar are you with Brazilian culture?
To be honest, we are not as familiar as we wish to be. We’ve heard that Brazilian cuisine is amazing and Brazilian people are very energetic but we wish to experience the culture firsthand. We’re curious about what’s trending in Brazil, what people wear, what people listen to, and what people do in their everyday lives but we’re not familiar with them yet so please teach us and share your culture with us! It’s always an amazing experience to learn about new cultures.
What does it mean to you to be able to spread Korean culture and music all over the world?
Of course, it’s an amazing feeling and we’re very thankful but we think this is only possible because people all over the world are willing to accept and learn. It’s amazing how people are now more open to new cultures, including Korean culture, and we’re very happy to be able to share our culture with people all around the world. This is all thanks to everybody and we’re always excited to be able to both spread our culture and learn about others. The world is coming closer and closer together!
Is there any aspect of Korean culture - like music, food, or other traditions - you’d like to introduce to the rest of the world?
We would really like to introduce a Korean culture and concept called “정” (pronounced as “jung”). It’s very difficult to explain since there is no proper translation that fully reflects the word but the closest word would be “affection”. In Korean culture, we always have “jung” for everyone, no matter where you are from and who you are; “Jung” makes us treat each other more nicely and take care of each other because we’re all living in this world together. We would love to spread the cultural concept of “jung” so everyone can share this positive message of universal love!
