Before traveling to Korea or while visiting Korea you probably noticed the enormous amount of coffee shops and amount of cozy places when you can enjoy hanging out with your friends, reading books or just sitting an enjoying the moment while drinking hot cup of coffee or tea (or as most Korean drink - iced versions of them). Someone might even say that South Korea is the country of coffee and they would not be wrong.
Recently I visited Korea again, but this time for short 2-week trip, and during this time I went to few places which I wanted to recommend. Especially during winter time when the weather outside is not always good, not mentioning the temperatures. So here are some places you might like to visit. Some of them are more popular for most of the tourists and locals and some are less known.
1. Dasique
It is actually one of the most known coffee shops in Seoul, located at Seongsu. Not only this place offers wide range od drinks from the hot to cold ones but also very unique desserts. I visited this place with my best friend before Christmas so most of the desserts were Christmas themed. If you want to visit this coffee shop and have the biggest choice of desserts I recommend coming just after opening. Also if you want to get the best spot you have to keep in mind that you might have to wait for some time. This coffee shop is located on the 2nd floor while on the 1st floor there is a Dasique shop with all the makeup goods (for that you probably have to make reservation at the spot and will have to wait even longer).
With my best friend we ordered two desserts, of course Christmas themed – snowflake and Santa Claus’ hat. And as for drinks hot coffee and ade with the ice cube in a peach shape, which was quite unique. Everything was delicious and also not that pricey.
2. Paletscent
I visited this café with my friends during our 1-day trip to Suwon. It is located just next to one of the most famous tourist attractions and historical spots – one of the gates of Suwon Fortress. It is a really good place, especially after a long walk alongside the fortress itself. They also serve a huge range of beverages and serve them in this funny looking basket/holder.
The view behind our drinks might look like a painting or a postcard but it is the actual view which you can enjoy while being there. Of course the whole interior was decorated with Christmas decorations and Christmas songs were played alongside the conversations of other customers.
3. Lazy Coffee Haus
If you are looking for a good spot, with fewer customers to hang out with your friends or do some assignments or to just to read a book, this place is for you. Also if you are a fan of Korean hip-hop or less famous music genres you will feel there like at home. They serve not only good quality coffee but also desserts mostly cookies, cheesecakes but also Dubai chocolate, which is quite popular nowadays in Korea.
The outside likewise the interior is simple but I think it gives unique charms to this place and makes it even more interesting. It is located very close to the campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, so if you happen to be a student there you have to visit this place, at least once. I assure you will not regret it.
4. Manhole Coffee
This coffee shop is located in the southern part of Seoul. In my opinion the location of it is very unique. Most of the cafes are usually located near tourists spots or near main roads, or like in Korea almost everywhere. But what I am trying to say about this particular place is that it is located in the neighbourhood of blocks of flats in the underground. When I got to the place with my friend we were actually surprised by its location cause almost not a living soul around and there is this café. But when we went to the café we still had to wait for our table cause it was fully booked.
If you are a fan of Harry Potter you will like this place cause it also has some things from the movie series and it actually look like taken from the Harry Potter set. They serve a wide range of coffee and tea and of course desserts. We ordered their signature coffee and enjoy our conversation while looking around.
What caught our attention then was the enormous chandelier hanging just above one of the tables. There were also many spots where you could take Instagram like photos, for those who are interested in SNS.
5. Jeokdang
As the previous one this café’s location is quite unique cause it is located in an office building and, I think because of that, is not that well known. I did not know of this place myself before my Korean friend told me about it. It is located in the center of Seoul near Euljiro station, but even though still not visible at first sight.
The reason why I recommend this place is that it has huge variety of one of the traditional Korean sweets – red bean paste jelly called ‘yanggaeng’. You might have heard this word before thanks to a song called ‘bamyanggaeng’ performed by Korean singer BIBI, which gain a lot of popularity. If you want to try not only traditional version but others too like: chocolate flavour, matcha flavour, pistachio flavour and many others this place is perfect. Almost everything is served on a wooden tables or in a wooden boxes and it looks amazing. With the addition of coffee you will definitely fall in love with this place.
The interior is simple but it also gives the atmosphere of the place. I wonder if this place is known among foreigners and tourist cause I was there twice and I have never seen any of them. Also when it gets darker the waitresses put on each table small candles so it is also a perfect place for a date.
There are much more places that I would like recommend visiting but these 5 were my top favourites. So if you have time during your stay or trip in Korea make sure to visit them too. Especially if you are in love with coffee and huge variety of desserts.
