On December 16, 2024, the first Korean-themed cafe opened in the heart of Thessaloniki, Greece, named "Moonkiz." The Moonkiz are charming little extraterrestrial creatures on a quest across the galaxy to discover the most delicious recipes in the universe. Their mission is to bring happiness to everyone.
The next day, on Dec 17, my friend Sophia and I visited Moonkiz. The atmosphere was wonderful, reminiscent of the aesthetic cafes in Korea, with only K-pop songs playing in the background, creating a lively yet relaxed vibe.
I was impressed by the creative menu, which offered a range of delicious treats inspired mainly by Korean culture.
I chose the original Bungeoppang from the menu, also known as Taiyaki in Japanese; a fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean paste. It was warm and delightfully crunchy and i liked the red bean paste filling. The cafe offers other flavors as well, including bougatsa (a Greek cream filling topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar), banoffee, nutella with strawberry, and more.
My friend tried the Korean won toast filled with mozzarella cheese and gochujang paste and she said that it was very satisfying and delicious. The mozzarella cheese was melted, and it was spicy just the right amount. She paired it with dalgona coffee, which was sweet, and its whipped coffee cream reminded her of frappé, a classic Greek coffee.
Other filling options for the won toast include mozzarella cheese, ham and mozzarella, and many others.
Moonkiz also has Bingsu, a Korean dessert made with shaved ice and various toppings, like red bean and pistachio, mango and coconut, as well as strawberry and matcha with biscuits. I decided not to try it since it's winter. Maybe I'll give it a try in the summer.
For drinks, Moonkiz offers dalgona, a coffee with a flavor reminiscent of Korean honeycomb candy, along with boba tea, fruit tea, and various other coffee options.
Since its opening, the cafe has quickly become a favorite spot for Greeks who are fans of K-pop.
The combination of great food, K-pop music, and a welcoming ambiance makes it a fantastic spot for Greeks wanting to experience modern K-culture and enjoy something new.
