[Interview] Farahnaz Mirdamadi: Iranian Winner of the Understanding Korea Essay Contest 2024
2025-01-01Every year, The Understanding Korea Essay Contest, organized by the Center for International Affairs at the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), invites participants from around the globe to share their perspectives on Korea’s image in the world. The 2024 contest encouraged writers to focus on two thought-provoking themes: “International Images of Korea” and “Notable Applications of Understanding Korea Materials.” The goal? To tackle misconceptions and improve how Korea is represented in educational materials worldwide.
This initiative has become a meaningful way to bridge cultures, and this year, it brought to light many inspiring voices, including that of Seyedeh Farahnaz Mirdamadi from Iran. She awarded the “Encouragement Prize” for her thoughtful essay. We had the opportunity to have a conversation with her and learn more about the inspiration behind her essay, her experience, and what she hopes for in the future.
When Ms. Mirdamadi first heard about the essay contest, she immediately felt a strong connection to its mission. "The idea of improving how Korea is shown in textbooks, and online platforms really spoke to me," she said. "It’s not just about representing a country; it’s about helping cultures understand each other better."
Her essay focused on “International Images of Korea,” where she looked at how Korea is presented globally. She pointed out areas that could be improved and shared creative ideas on how to make better contexts.
She shared how her own cultural background shaped her perspective. "As an Iranian, I’ve seen how global perceptions can sometimes miss the mark," she said. “Iran and Korea might seem different, but I see a lot of similarities in how we both try to share our cultures with the world.” I wanted to be part of a project that values accuracy and depth, especially for a country like Korea, which has such a rich and complex identity."
"I was especially interested in how Korea’s story, from its rich history to its rapid technological growth, is portrayed," she continued. "There’s so much to admire, but often these stories are either simplified or left out altogether. I wanted to highlight the parts that are missing and suggest practical ways to make these narratives fuller and more meaningful."
Finding the right balance between research and adding a personal perspective was key to her writing process. "I didn’t want it to come across as just another article. My goal was to make my insights both real and helpful," she said.
Her hard work paid off when she found out she’d won the Prize. "It was such an unforgettable moment," she said with a smile. "It wasn’t just about winning, it felt like all the effort I put into understanding and sharing Korea’s story was truly valued." Her essay was a true labor of love, grounded in careful research and a deep respect for Korean culture. She put in the effort to review international textbooks and online platforms, taking a close look at how Korea’s image is shaped and presented to the world.
Taking part in the Understanding Korea Essay Contest was more than just a competition for her. It was an opportunity to connect cultures and create change. "This experience reminded me of how writing can truly bring people together." she said.
Although this interview highlights Ms. Mirdamadi’s accomplishment, it's also important to mention that Iran had another winner this year: Mr. Bamshad Sadjadimanizani, who won the Excellence Prize. She spoke with heartfelt pride. "It means so much to me that both of us from Iran were recognized in this global contest, "she said.
The Understanding Korea Project works to correct misunderstandings and improve how Korea is depicted in international educational materials. By giving people like Ms. Mirdamadi the opportunity to share their unique views, it highlights diverse perspectives on Korea’s identity. Efforts like these strengthen cultural ties and promote a more accurate understanding of Korea worldwide.
