I happened to come across with a random advertisement from our local publishing company and noticed that a local translator in the Philippines had translated a well-known Korean book into English. This Korean book was on my extensive list of recommended books by well-known Korean celebrities. What's even more interesting is that it's now available in the Philippines, making it simpler for us to get a copy of the book even from the closest local bookshops. My friend and I agreed to buy and try this Korean book after I told her about it right away.
Features of this book and writer
The author and illustrator of this Korean book, "I Decided to Live As Me" is Author Kim So-hyun. Over a million copies of this self-help book have already been sold globally and she even held her very first book-signing event in the Philippines on September 16, 2023 during the Manila International Book Fair. Her book “I Decided to Live as Me” is also a familiar book with fans of BTS because one of the members was seen holding this book in one of their reality show during their vacation abroad.
My initial thoughts on the book
I've never read a Korean self-help book before, having generally read Korean literature, and I noticed that this book had a different writing tone than the books I usually read. The author is like a close friend conversing with me in a casual discussion but she also gives me her best advice in a simple way, so I found the book to be light and easy to grasp. Sincerely, I felt it was a psychological book that could improve the mood of any reader, which is why I used to suggest it especially to young adults starting their careers in the "real" world. The author's presentation and digital illustration further persuades readers of the author's versatility because it gives more substance to the whole concept of her book.
What I have learned from the book
This book aids in our realization that decisions must always be made on our own, without delay or reliance on others, and that we must deal with life's challenges. This is a highly recommended book, especially for young adults in their 20s or 30s, who are just beginning to establish their own careers or who have temporarily lost sight of their goals owing to life's hardships. The most valuable takeaway from this book is that each of us is capable of realizing our own "best worth," which allows us to think independently and follow our own path without having to copy others. Although we can always learn from our failures, successful people are typically those that achieved their goals and knew early on in life what they wanted to do with their lives. I really adore this book because it teaches us how to love and accept who we are, as well as how to start identifying and developing our own talents.
My favorite topic within this book
"Learn to Live with the problems”. Even for the most successful individuals on the planet, resolving our troubles in life may prove to be the greatest obstacle. However, I appreciate how the author states quite clearly that even when we're facing our greatest struggle and feel like life is unjust at times, we still need to value and trust ourselves in order to solve the issue and keep believing in ourselves.
