In the month of October, the Consulate General of Republic of Korea in Chennai organized a mesmerizing Korean traditional performance by the "Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company" to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of India - Korea diplomatic relations.
Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company was established in December 2000 to extend the citizen's cultural enjoyment contributing to succession and conservation of traditional Korean dance.
So come with me on a journey and get a glimpse of the breathtaking performances by "Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company".
One thing I must definitely mention is the stage, it was very beautifully decorated and it added to the feel of traditional Korean performances that were lined up for the evening.
The event started off with the welcome speech by the respected dignitaries, Consul-general of Republic of Korea in Chennai Kim Chang-nyun, Ulsan City's Deputy Mayor Suh Jeong- wook and Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Ministry of Information Technology and Digital Services, Tamil Nadu.
The "Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company" event started off with "Namdo Gutgeori", an instrumental ensemble performance.
The next performance was seungmu, dance of the Buddhist nun.
The performances that followed next were Wangui Dderak.
Wangui Dderak means King's garden. It is a contemporary reconstruction of two traditional Korean court dances.
First was the chunaengmu (a royal court dance during Joseon Dynasty) performance.
The second performance by Wangui Dderak was taepyeongmu (traditional dance performed to wish for peace).
cheongseonggok : Song of clear and beautiful sound.
Dance of the Aristocrats/Scholars: hallyangmu.
The next performance was a contemporary reconstruction of an episode from pansori (musical storytelling performed by a solo singer and a drummer) song called “Chunhyangga." It is a very famous song that is about a love story between Chunhyang, a beautiful daughter of a gisaeng (courtesan) and Yi Mongryong, a son of a high-ranking aristocrat.
chulgang : A solo performance of geomungo, a traditional Korean string instrument.
buchaechum : Korea's signature fan dance performance.
The last performance by the "Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company" was pangut.
Pangut, a collective and artistic form of agricultural music that was performed in the large courtyard of the village.
The event by Ulsan Metropolitan Dance Company added to the memorable Korean events that I have been to so far.
I always wanted to watch different traditional performances together at one place and I finally got to see it all at this event and it was too beautiful beyond words.
Amazing music and dance by the very talented performers dressed in beautiful & colourful Hanbok, mesmerized the audience and watching them perform was truly Magical.
Korean events are always filled with Smiles, Laughter & Happy memories.
