Welcome to the guide to the Jeju Haenyeo Special Exhibition-Curating Guide & DIY Workshop at the Korean Cultural Centre in India. The Jeju Haenyeo tradition has a profound impact on Korean heritage.
With a long history, these amazing women have been referred to as "sea women," as they harvest seafood using knives and without modern diving equipment. They are also known as "Eco-Feminist" because they played a major role in supporting the family. They began swimming at 8 and were very skilful in Muljil by the age of 18, and excellent and superior by the age of 35. They are considered rare women and attract a lot of attention from around the world.
My favourite part of the day was the DIY workshop inspired by the Haenyeo lifestyle, which allowed me to express my creativity with the detailed guide and a KCCI expert who helped me with this process where I made traditional paper dolls by folding the creases and showcase my sea-themed artwork.
The workshop was open to walk-in registration to anyone who wanted to learn more about Haenyeo with 50 seats per workshop on a first come first serve, allowing for an enriching experience without reservations.
The exhibition and workshop have been created in collaboration with specialists and cultural ambassadors, providing an immersive experience of Haenyeo culture. Also, Jeju Haenyeos taught us don't simply consider nature as something to take advantage of.
